R&D Specialist Mikael Kyriacou balances lab routines and innovative challenges to drive scientific progress

Mikael Kyriacou, MSc, is an R&D Specialist at Lynsight, focusing on cell culture and protein-based
laboratory functions while contributing to a variety of research and development projects. His
work involves cell culture, running the DiagMMR test, conducting analyses, and providing crucial
data that drives the company’s scientific progress. Outside of the lab, Mikael finds balance
through creative hobbies, enriching his work-life dynamic.

Mikael’s passion for science was ignited in his hometown of Oulu, where he first dreamed of becoming a scientist. From a young age, he was captivated by biology, fascinated by science, and inspired by his teachers. This early passion led Mikael to pursue genetics and molecular biology at the University of Helsinki, where he earned his master’s degree. He found his calling in molecular biology and thrived in the university’s challenging yet supportive environment.

“I’ve always been fascinated by biology, especially how everything in nature functions at a cellular
level. As a child, I’d play ‘the scientist’, experimenting with test tubes and imagining how the world worked on a microscopic scale. It was clear to me early on that molecular biology was the path I wanted to follow.”

Before joining Lynsight in 2022, Mikael completed his bachelor’s thesis on Lynch syndrome under the supervision of a researcher in Professor Minna Nyström’s group. He then went on to study the effects of decreased MLH1 expression on gene expression and cellular functions for his master’s thesis. This experience deepened his understanding of genetic mechanisms related to diseases.Today, Mikael contributes to a wide range of lab routines and R&D activities, including working on expanding the current product catalogue.

Mikael’s daily tasks are a mix of routine lab work and innovative challenges. He conducts cell culture, runs laboratory tests, analyzes results, and supports various ongoing R&D projects. He enjoys the balance between routine lab work and stepping outside of traditional settings to tackle new challenges. While research differs from business-oriented roles, Mikael finds fulfillment in knowing his work contributes directly to the development of impactful diagnostic and treatment products.

“I enjoy the hands-on aspect of the work—not just data and theory, but real lab work. It’s exciting to be part of a small team where I get a comprehensive overview of the business and can make a tangible impact on the projects we’re working on. It’s rewarding to apply my skills and make a real difference, particularly in healthcare. The chance to help people and contribute to cancer treatment through our research is motivating.”

Looking ahead, Mikael is excited about the company’s expansion, particularly the discussions around operations in the U.S. While he is happy in his current role, he aims to deepen his expertise and hopes to specialize further in product development and innovation. Mikael thrives on the complexity and unpredictability of biology, embracing the challenge of solving problems that might be resolved tomorrow—or never.

“I’m happy where I am now, but I’m always looking forward to taking on more responsibility in projects and deepening my expertise in lab research and product development. The mysteries of biology are fascinating—they can be solved tomorrow or never. And that’s the challenge I’m eager to take on.

Outside of work, Mikael finds balance through sports, photography, and crafting. These hobbies offer a refreshing break from the fast-paced world of R&D, allowing him to unwind and recharge. He enjoys the quiet focus these activities bring, providing a sharp contrast to the intense problem-solving in the lab.

“I enjoy the quiet focus of doing sports, photography, and crafting. It’s a good contrast to the problem-solving in the lab and helps me clear my mind. However, I also have a competitive nature and enjoy taking on new challenges to achieve new skills and abilities in my hobbies, too.”

Mikael deeply values the strong team spirit at Lynsight, where collaboration and support are key. He believes that the team’s collective competence and positive company culture make each day enjoyable and contribute to the company’s success.

“The team here is fantastic. We all get along well, and it makes coming to work fun every day. The competence and drive within our team are a big part of what makes Lynsight special.”

Through his role at Lynsight, Mikael is making a meaningful impact in the world of biotechnology and diagnostics. As the company expands its presence in the U.S., his contributions will continue to drive Lynsight’s success in bringing groundbreaking innovations to the forefront.

“I’m excited about the future, especially with our growing international presence. The work we’re doing at Lynsight has huge potential to make a difference, and it’s inspiring to be part of it.”
